Browns Not Competitive In Blowout Loss To Commanders, 34-13: Game Notes
Scored earth feels imminent at this point.
Somehow the Browns are in a worse place after this game than they were last week. I didn’t think I would be typing that but, yeah, that sort of season is upon us. They are finding new ways to self-implode weekly and there is a general sense of non-belief in whatever the goal is they are pursuing each week. I don’t subscribe to the body language doctor method, but if I did, I would say there seems to be very few players inspired and even fewer who believe in the ability of the team to accomplish winning.
The process of simply fielding the right number of players for an NFL play couldn’t be accomplished at times, and that doesn’t even include the role of everyone doing their job post-snap. These are the sort of vibes you have when the team is in late-December and missed their goal, not early October.
I am very opposed to the idea of abrupt change. But it feels imminent at this point. Who you want that change to be is up to interpretation but there is no shortage of options.
Let’s dig into the game notes.
I am genuinely unsure where to start with this game offensively. It was one of the worst collective efforts I can recall in a long time — and we have seen some ugly football. Penalties, missed assignments, bad quarterback play, drops, bad coaching. It was all on display.
On 21 1st down plays in the first three quarters, the Browns offense went for more than 3 yards on just 8 of them. 19 2nd down plays yielded just 4 plays of more than 3 yards. They have no rhythm or consistent structure that works for them.
On 3rd down and long situations, and the Browns faced 10 of these, the timing of the routes being run, paired with the pace of pressure and quarterback drop, consistently leads to dead plays. Protection is awful, the quarterback’s processing is broken, and the opposing defenses have no issue playing underneath routes and taking away quick throw options. It is quarterback without an answer, stepping up into pressure, and trying to run for anything. It is brutal to watch in real-time.
