Day 8 of Browns training camp is in the books, and with it comes an important milestone. The initial install period is officially complete.

On the final day of installs, the coaching staff’s focus was on insert run game, insert play-action concepts. On the defensive side, there was considerable emphasis Thursday on communication and exchanges against trips bunch formations and motion off of it. The secondary spent time walking through how to handle motion, route exchanges, and the natural rub concepts offenses create from bunch formations. Those details become critical for a defense that plans to play plenty of man coverage. One missed communication at the line of scrimmage can turn into an easy explosive play.

It was also another rotation day, with Shedeur Sanders working primarily with the first-team offense.

One small wrinkle worth noting: Deshaun Watson opened a couple of the 7-on-7 periods with the first unit. That’s something we really haven’t seen on Sanders’ days previously. I’m not sure I’d read too much into it, though. Throughout camp, the Browns have mixed personnel extensively. It’s common to see the first-team defensive line paired with starting safeties while second-team corners rotate in, so not every rep is a true “ones vs. ones” evaluation. This was a bit different, though. Sanders could have needed medical attention or was going through something with a coach, but it feels worth noting.

Physical Practice Focus

With the pads on, the emphasis was heavily on the run game.

Cleveland limited the passing attempts more than we’ve seen, instead focusing on creating movement against an aggressive defensive front that has consistently lived in the offensive backfield throughout camp.

The offensive line responded with one of its better run-blocking days, opening holes for Quinshon Judkins, Dylan Sampson, and Armani Marshall to rip off several impressive runs.

Injury Report At Defensive Tackle

The Browns remained without:

  • Mason Graham

  • Mike Hall Jr. (learned he has a dislocated finger)

  • Kalia Davis

  • Malik Collins (PUP)

Still, the defensive front continued to set the tone for intensity.

Jared Verse, Alex Wright, and Isaiah McGuire were disruptive throughout practice, consistently creating pressure.

Grant Delpit produced one of the defensive plays of the day. Sanders delivered a solid throw, but Delpit closed from over the top, reached around the receiver, got a hand on the football before the catch point, and deflected it into the air where Myles Harden came away with the interception.

Tyson Campbell added another interception, this time off Watson. It’s a play we’ve seen Campbell make multiple times during camp. He stayed in phase trailing a crossing receiver before undercutting the throw at precisely the right moment.

Campbell has been one of the biggest standouts of camp.

His combination of length, speed, and instincts has consistently shown up, and I continue to believe he’s one of the more underrated pieces of this football team heading into the season.
