Newsletter: Drew Allar's Pressure, Ashton Jeanty's Stock, and Discussing Q-Counter Bash
Fiesta Bowl thoughts, and if the Browns want to entertain a world with a mobile quarterback they have the concepts.
Good morning and Happy New Year to all of you! I hope this Newsletter finds you well and the day is filled with some peace and prosperity as we look forward to what is going to be the best year yet. We here at Browns Film Breakdown have some fun things to discuss with you and implement as this important offseason looms. I think you’ll enjoy some of the ideas we roll out. For now, though, I want to hit on the action we saw last night in the Fiesta Bowl with a couple key prospects in mind. Then we get to some X’s and O’s because you know I can’t help myself.
Penn State won the Fiesta Bowl 31-14 in a game that was competitive into the mid-4th quarter before Boise State’s drive deep into Nittany Lions territory stalled out and they missed their second field goal of the night. The takeaways from most of these college affairs in bowl games are mainly centered on the prospects we think the Browns could be selecting in a few short months, so we start there.
Drew Allar has already committed to returning to Penn State for his final season as I’m sure the boosters have his bank account feeling good, but there could be some real NFL pressure. With a rough collective class entering the league and Allar putting together more tape like last night in potentially two more games, you could see a change of course. Not likely, but Allar was stellar last night on touch throws throughout. Boise did a great job dialing up the pressure and he responded well.
The story of the Cleveland kid returning home to change the fortunes of his favorite team is something fun to dream about. The Medina-product has transformed his body and play style since those college days and keeps improving given the talent around him. He is going to be fun to track in the Orange Bowl and into next season.
Our eyes were also on Ashton Jeanty as the Browns look to potentially reshape their running back room this offseason. It was an uneven night for the Boise State back as the Penn State front is different than many others they have faced this year and they were keyed in on him. He rushed 30 times for 103 yards so the production was not very efficient but he had real moments.
Inside of those moments were the traits we think will translate really well with the contact balance and general power that I think makes him the toughest back to tackle in the last few classes.
The biggest issue was not a lack of efficiency, eventually teams who load up the box well enough with more athletes across the board will end up getting the best of you and force the passing game, but the fumbles were a concern as well. He had two of them in this game and one led to a key turnover.
I think Jeanty is worth all of the first round hype and I do believe he would be a great addition for the Browns but I’m not sure the Top-10 hype of Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson is quite worth it. The testing will tell the full story.
We’re going to close our Newsletter for the day with a tease on a topic I will cover much deeper once the season is over and we get deeper into what the Browns choose to do schematically with their offense. For now I want to hit on how the Browns are working in schemes for the mobile quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and one scheme in particular: Q-Counter Bash.
