Newsletter: Jalen Milroe Scouting Write Up, and Trait Grades for each Quarterback Studied
Find out where Milroe falls compared to his peers in the class.
Evaluation season carries on at Browns Film Breakdown with Alabama’s Jalen Milroe next up. The only thing for sure about this year’s quarterback class outside of Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders is that nothings for sure (I hope enough people got that WCW Sting reference).
Milroe, by far, has the best athletic profile of this year’s class. He’s an electric athlete with breakaway speed and tough ball carrying ability to be effective in the NFL. Jake and I scratched the surface on him last week, and gave a quick run down of how we see his strengths and weaknesses. I don’t think you have to be a grizzled NFL scout to recognize where he excels and where he doesn’t, but he has a unique athletic profile that could be explosive with the right play caller.
We used the Browns grading scale from my final year with the team, and in case you forgot, there are seven different overall grades to determine what the scout thinks the player will be after his second year in the league:
70 — Blue — Difference Maker, Pro Bowl Player
60 — Red — Impact Starter
50 — Gold — Capable Starter
40 — Black — Role Player
30 — Green — Backup
20 — Purple — Practice Squad, Emergency Player
10 — Gray — Training Camp Player, Reject
There’s also a probability grade to determine the scout’s confidence that the player will reach his overall grade:
5 — 90% probability
4 — 70% probability
3 — 50% probability
2 — 30% probability
1 — 10% probability
The overall and probability grades are how you champion or crush a guy in draft meetings, but the nitty-gritty aspect of the Browns’ scouting reports is the physical tools and position specific grades. These are the trait grades I talked about last week, which also use a 1-5 grading scale. Andrew Berry didn’t want 1-5 within reports, so he came up with a couple words that are equivalent to each number.
1 = Poor/Replacement Level
2 = Marginal/Below-average
3 = Average/Adequate
4 = Good/Above-average
5 = Excellent/Rare
After my report on Milroe, I’ll compare his traits to the other three QBs we’ve broken down already. Hopefully, everyone will get an even more in depth look at how I see these quarterbacks.
Let’s get into the Alabama QB.
