Newsletter: Prospects the Browns need to see a strong showing from at today’s Senior Bowl
One final chance for these particular prospects to impress those in Berea.
We’re at the end of a long week of Senior Bowl sessions down in Mobile and now it’s just time for the on field performance as the two sides gear up for a 2:30PM kickoff on NFL Network. The Browns front office and coaching staff has been all over the field watching, coaching, and getting a great feel for the prospects they can choose all over a busy draft where they have more total capital than any other franchise.
While they game will come and go quickly, and most opinions of the prospects are firmly entrenched, there are a few who could do themselves some favors from the Browns perspective to show they are worthy of being selected late in the first round or with the Browns 33rd or 67th selections in late April. That is what we will be focusing on here as these prospects can make a big push on a big stage.
QB Jalen Milroe, Alabama
It’s been more down than up for Milroe this week as it appears the athletic quarterback is working through some mechanical tweaks and getting comfortable playing from alignments he was not asked to do very often throughout his collegiate career. There have been some moments for Milroe that show you he can be a functional pocket thrower in the NFL.
But there have been far too many misses in both processing and execution this week to feel like Milroe is anything other than a second-round pick dart throw at maximum. The offense would have to be totally shaped around his skill-set early in his career and the perfect coaching staff would need to put every piece of the design in place to lean into Milroe’s athleticism. He can’t come into a structure such as the Browns aiming point this year and thrive anytime soon.
Convincing general managers to take Milroe on the second day of the draft feels like the most logical path following this week’s sessions but perhaps a big day on the stage of a real game can help Milroe turn the tide. His combine performance will help, no doubt, but he will need to be sharp today.
QB Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss
Dart is probably turning into the draft’s most debated player. The happens in every cycle and with a quarterback shallow class, there are clearly scouts and evaluators who are enamored with what Dart could be following an up and down collegiate career at Ole Miss. He certainly looks the part and his on-field work was stronger by the end of the week following some rougher moment in the first few sessions. He was named as the top quarterback on the American team following the week.
