The Browns Are Trying To Trade A Quarterback
The Browns have a surplus at the position and the NFL has teams in need. One should go, so let's figure out which one makes the most sense.
It’s nice to have one of those problems that don’t feel like a problem. But nonetheless it is still a problem. Well, the Browns have one of those right now at quarterback.
Rolling over Deshaun Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson from last year, the front office recognized it did not want to expose this deep roster to the same quarterback crisis yet again so they turned to the market. That led to the arrival of Jameis Winston and then, surprisingly, Tyler Huntley.
All four quarterbacks on the roster have multiple starts on their resume, but the roles seem rather defined. Watson remains the unquestioned starter, Winston the veteran backup, Thompson-Robinson the rising youngster, and Huntley the veteran trade or practice squad piece. But the status quo leaves questions to be answered.
If we presume that Watson and Winston are staying in Cleveland, and there’s little reason to think otherwise currently, then it comes down to how the Browns navigate the other two. With the NFL’s rule change to allow a game day quarterback elevation from the practice squad, it becomes less important to carry a third quarterback but all the more important to get the right one to the practice squad.
