Another preseason game today kicks off for the Browns as they gear up for the 2026 season. The day will likely be filled with backups on both sides following their Thursday session where the starters got after it though a series of practice sessions. Yes, the Browns play today and it’s a game that will have intrigue for many trying to make the roster, but Friday night’s news altered the scope of the Browns football weekend.
Nick Chubb announced his retirement, and man does it hit home. He was so special. A rare mix of elite speed, vision, bruising and physical style, and a true grinder. He was a throwback in every sense of the word. Before the knee injury in Pittsburgh, Chubb was averaging 5.2 yards per carry — a number that put him in rarefied statistical territory, the kind of efficiency that makes a running back worth building around rather than just employing.
After it, across parts of three seasons in Cleveland and (unfortunately) Houston, that number cratered to 3.7. That night in Pittsburgh changed everything and it took out one of the best players at the absolute peak of his powers. I will never forget how special he was carrying the football, and how his vision worked so perfectly with his complementary skill set. I always compared his ability to see plays unfold two or three steps ahead to what LeBron James does on a basketball court. His elite window was brief, more so than it should have been, but there will never be anything like watching him. He was out modern day version of Jim Brown.
None of how it ended changes meant to a fanbase starved for someone who stayed quiet, worked harder than anyone, played angry and stayed loyal. He finishes third on the franchise rushing list behind Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly, which is its own kind of permanent. In NFL history, there are three players to average 5.0+ yards per carry, 70+ rushing yards per game & score 50+ career rushing touchdowns:
He was 1:1 in our Browns history and I know I will forever be grateful I got the chance to watch him play and break down his film. Here’s to you, Nick Chubb. One of the best to ever do it. I look forward to the Browns celebrating his career and giving him the proper send off he deserves in Berea and at the stadium in a game this year.

Looks like it will be a delightful late summer afternoon in Cleveland. It’ll end up just south of 80 degrees with a slight wind going to the Southwest. There is a small chance of storms but nothing to be concerned with overall right now.
