The Opening Drive 2/10: Browns Expand DC Search -- External Candidates
The Browns laid some groundwork for their plan with defensive leadership.
Todd Monken made it clear in his introductory press conference that whether Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator in Cleveland or not, he would run the same system. With much of the offensive staff assembled and Schwartz officially submitting his resignation the Browns are looking to hire their new defensive coordinator. Which begs the question: who makes the most sense if they really plan to run the same defense without its architect? The first inclination is to look internally, and the Browns have, announcing over the weekend that they have interviewed internal candidates Jason Tarver and Ephraim Banda. However, the Browns widened their defensive coordinator search on Monday, requesting interviews with multiple external assistants while continuing to monitor other veteran options.
This expanded list reflects less focus on continuity and more on development with candidates specializing in secondary experience. It appears they are at least open to exploring different approaches on the back end of the defense to pair with the aggressive identity Jim Schwartz installed.
