For about 72 hours, it looked like the Baltimore Ravens had pulled off one of the biggest defensive moves of the offseason. Then the entire thing unraveled. The Ravens’ interest made perfect sense from a roster standpoint. Despite their reputation as a defensive powerhouse, Baltimore finished the season with just 30 sacks, tied for one of the lowest totals in franchise history.

Adding Crosby would have instantly solved that issue.

The 28-year-old pass rusher has been one of the NFL’s most productive edge defenders since entering the league in 2019. Over his career he has piled up 69.5 sacks and more pressures than nearly any defender in football during that span.

Baltimore had agreed to acquire star edge rusher Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders in a blockbuster trade package that included two first-round picks (2026 and 2027).

The move was widely seen as a massive swing by the Ravens to fix one of their biggest roster weaknesses: a pass rush that struggled to generate consistent pressure last season.

But just days later — before the trade could officially be finalized with the start of the new league year — the Ravens backed out. The deal ultimately fell apart after Crosby failed his physical with Baltimore, raising concerns about the long-term outlook of his knee following recent surgery. Crosby underwent meniscus surgery earlier this offseason after playing through injury late in the year, and the Ravens evidently saw enough risk during the medical review to void the trade entirely.

The collapse stunned the league because the deal had already progressed to the point where Crosby had begun saying goodbye to Raiders fans and preparing for a move to Baltimore.

Instead, everything reversed overnight as Baltimore kept its draft capital and Crosby remains a Raider.

Not even 12 hours later, they pivoted to another proven pass rusher — agreeing to a four-year, $112 million contract with Trey Hendrickson to bolster their edge rotation. The move signaled that Baltimore still intends to aggressively address the pass rush — just with a different player and Hendrickson’s availability this far into the free agency cycle probably played a role in the decision — whether the Ravens front office want to admit it or not.

Crosby remains under contract after signing a three-year, $106.5 million extension in 2025. However, the trade drama and injury questions have created uncertainty around his long-term future. Teams around the league are already monitoring whether Las Vegas might revisit trade discussions but what’s known is that they plan currently to keep Crosby unless someone meets their two first-round picks asking price.

Just a big reminder, though, this situation highlights one of the strangest realities of the NFL transaction cycle. Deals can be agreed to and teams can start planning around them, but until the physical is completed, nothing is truly official. The Browns will be doing the same type of waiting on their own side with Elgton Jenkins physical — but again, these things are subjective from team-to-team and risk/reward is calculated.

What I do know is the league’s process for these “Failed Physical” designations seems very flawed, at best. It can be used as leverage.

For Baltimore, the Crosby move briefly looked like the defining defensive acquisition of the offseason, but instead, it became one of the most chaotic trade reversals the league has seen in years.
