The Opening Drive 5/21: OTA Day 2 Recap, Quinshon Judkins' Health, and Ronnie Hickman Sighting
Discussing everything we saw in Berea on Tuesday as the Browns has their first open to the press OTA session.
The Cleveland Browns were back on the field Wednesday for Day 2 of OTA practices, and while there still is not a firm quarterback pecking order taking shape publicly, the structure of practice did offer a little more insight into how Todd Monken is handling the competition early in the offseason program.
Monken continued utilizing “two-spotting” throughout portions of practice, allowing multiple quarterbacks to work simultaneously with different groups during install periods and team drills. During the early portions of practice, Deshaun Watson and Dillon Gabriel were frequently paired together in one group, while Shedeur Sanders and Taylen Green rotated with another. The Browns mixed those pairings throughout the day, but the bigger takeaway was that the coaching staff is clearly trying to maximize reps for all four quarterbacks rather than establishing a strict hierarchy this early.
During one of the more notable 11-on-11 periods open to media viewing, Sanders reportedly took the first rep, followed by Gabriel and then Watson. That sequence immediately generated conversation because many expected Watson to consistently open team periods if the Browns already viewed him clearly atop the depth chart. Instead, the Browns continue rotating opportunities and evaluation reps throughout practice.
