The Opening Drive 5/4: Free Agent Options at Nickel and Edge: Upgrading or Development
Examining potential roles that still need to be filled on the post-draft roster.
As we examine Jake’s depth chart with the team’s latest additions via the Browns’ 2026 draft picks and UDFA’s, there are still veteran options available who can help shape how this team looks in September. The two roles that lack clarity at this point are nickel cornerback and rotational edge rusher. The Browns had AJ Epenesa under contract, but he failed his physical. The team has some interesting young options on the roster, as they signed Myles Bryant, who has played 1572 snaps covering the slot in his career. He has been in Houston the last two seasons but served as New England’s primary Nickel defender in 2023 and 2024.
The UDFA class introduces former West Virginia cornerback Michael Coates Jr. to the nickel competition and three EDGE players, including Logan Fano, Tyreak Sapp, and Khordae Sydnor. Here’s a deeper look at the free agents worth consideration at this point, remembering that as we get past June first and into training camp, other veteran options will shake loose.
Nickel / Slot Cornerback Options
Mike Hilton
Hilton brings a completely different element. He’s one of the most physical slot defenders in the league, particularly against the run and underneath routes. He thrives in aggressive roles, blitzing, triggering downhill, and disrupting timing.
If Cleveland wants to add more edge and attitude to the middle of the defense, Hilton fits. The tradeoff is managing age and usage, but in a defined role, he still offers high-impact snaps and leadership.
Adoree’ Jackson
Jackson offers versatility. He’s played outside at a high level and has the athletic traits to move inside in certain situations. That flexibility can help with matchup-based game plans.
However, the nine-year veteran is not a natural nickel. This would be more about maximizing talent across the secondary and adding another veteran presence than locking in a true slot solution.
Fabian Moreau
Moreau had a good season in limited snaps with Minnesota last season. He understands route concepts, has experience inside and outside, and can step in without the game overwhelming him. You’re not getting elite play, but you are getting reliability.
For Cleveland, this would be about insurance, making sure the position doesn’t become a liability.
Notes: The nickel corner market is very thin. There aren’t many options that would be a clear upgrade over the competition they currently have on the roster.
