'What We Learned' from Browns Joint Practice with Panthers
The final tune up before the preseason kicks off on Friday.
The Browns find themselves in Carolina for their lone joint practice session against the Panthers ahead of Friday’s preseason opener. The practice was held early in the day in order to give more rest from the physical session to the game on Friday night and to try to beat the rain continually falling on the Carolinas.
While there are plenty of similarities to how the two sides operate their practices, the key difference is that the Panthers do not allow their team settings (7-on-7 or 11-on-11) to be filmed. Since the session was closed to any fans that means only reporters on-site could provide updates and they came without video.
However, we did see some some of the early practice elements and then we can update you on the notes provides from those watching closely. Let’s dig into the details.
In the 1-on-1 period we finally caught a glimpse of left tackle Dawand Jones matching up with someone other than Myles Garrett and you can see how well he is moving with his reduced size. Here he is matched up with Panthers’ EDGE Princely Umanmielen. He does a good job of staying square to the inside/out path here but he does hook Umanmielen’s facemask.
A’Shawn Robinson and Teven Jenkins squared off with the interior group and it’s a good look at the hand fighting that happens for leverage. Robinson tries to get under that left hand of Jenkins but the right hand to the throat would draw a flag. Win for Jenkins.
Lastly, we have Patrick Jones II of Carolina against Training Camp standout Jackson Barton. Barton does a nice job. of recovering against the spin move after he buries his head a bit. This would be a split rep for both sides depending on quarterback pocket movement.
Let’s dig into the team session details now.
The sentiment overall is that the better day was had by the Panthers overall. The Browns had some moments and the defense frustrated the Panthers early on but overall more plays were made by the Panthers collectively. Of course, this means very little in the grand scheme, but here are the notes.
