The Opening Drive 2/5: The Browns Best Options At Defensive Coordinator
If its not going to be Jim Schwartz the Browns need the right fit at DC to keep the system in place. We examine the options.
When new head coach Todd Monken confirmed that the Browns plan to keep running Jim Schwartz’s defensive system regardless of who the defensive coordinator is. It was a clarification that surely made the defensive players feel good about their direction during a period where Schwartz’s future remains unclear.
“First off, my anticipation is we’re not going to change the system. Very difficult to go against – not planning on changing the system. We’re built for the system that they’re in currently. And I’m not going to get into staffing, because that’s not at this time to get into that. But they can be rest assured that we’re going to keep the same system. We’re still going to let them attack; we’re still going to let them play free. I can’t see any other way. They’re a big reason why I took this job, the defensive players.”
Whether Schwartz returns or not, Cleveland intends to maintain its aggressive, Wide-9, front-four-driven identity. The next defensive coordinator will not be hired to reinvent the defense; instead, he will be hired to preserve its key principles that have allowed the Browns personnel to thrive.
This search isn’t about finding the next big thinker. It’s about finding someone who understands how Schwartz’s system works and how it fits the ready-made personnel on defense. This isn’t to say that each potential defensive coordinator can’t bring their own take on things, but Monken understands the aspects of Schwartz’s style that make the Browns defense difficult on offenses and wants to keep them intact.
The Internal Options
Ephraim Banda has become one of the most important pieces of Cleveland’s defensive infrastructure. As safeties coach and defensive pass game coordinator, he has been deeply involved in coverage structure, disguise packages, and weekly game planning. He represents the cleanest internal transition and the smoothest possible handoff.
Jason Tarver brings previous coordinator experience and has been heavily involved in linebacker development and front-seven organization. He understands how Schwartz structures run fits and pressure timing. Tarver offers a more authoritative presence built on experience.
