The Opening Drive 3/24: The Curious Case of Tylan Wallace

It's been a strange NFL career for the Oklahoma State product but the Browns present a real chance at production.

Throughout free agency we thought it was likely the Browns would add some sort of veteran receiver. As most of the upper-echelon names went off the board, it started to become less likely anything was going to shake loose before the draft. As of late, however, the Browns have been adding depth to several positions that bring core special teams value. That has happened at receiver as they came to terms with former Baltimore Ravens receiver Tylan Wallace. But his career is rather curious so far.

Wallace entered the NFL in 2021 as a fourth-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens, arriving with a productive college résumé but stepping into a crowded wide receiver room. From the start, his role was defined less by offensive opportunity and more by his ability to contribute on special teams. As a rookie, he appeared in all 17 games but managed just two receptions, quickly establishing the early theme of his career: earning a roster spot through versatility rather than volume.

That reality continued over the next two seasons. Injuries, including a hamstring issue in 2022, slowed any momentum he hoped to build, and by 2023 he remained buried on the offensive depth chart. Still, Wallace delivered one of the most memorable moments of his career — and one of the rarest plays in the league — with a walk-off overtime punt return touchdown against the Rams. It was a reminder that even in a limited role, his ability to impact a game in an instant had not disappeared.

In 2024, Wallace finally saw a glimpse of offensive opportunity. He posted career highs across the board, including 11 receptions for 193 yards and a touchdown, highlighted by an 84-yard score from Lamar Jackson — the longest touchdown pass of Jackson’s career. For a brief stretch, it looked like Wallace might carve out a more consistent role as a vertical threat who could punish defenses when given space.

But like much of his career, that momentum proved difficult to sustain. In 2025, his production dipped again as he returned to a depth role, finishing with minimal receiving numbers while continuing to contribute on special teams. By the end of his tenure in Baltimore, Wallace’s statistical profile remained modest, but his value was never fully captured by the box score. He had become the type of player coaches trust — reliable, assignment-sound, and capable of delivering in isolated moments.

Let’s dig into what he did best in Baltimore.

Wallace’s athletic portfolio isn’t elite. His RAS score was a middle-tier at best coming out of Oklahoma State with a surprising lack of explosion.
